WHY CHOOSE KIM COPELAND PRODUCTIONS TO RECORD YOUR SONG DEMOS?

There’s a lot of competition out there and some of those competitors are professional songwriters who might spend 2-4K per demo. If you’re smart about your budget, then you’re going to try to get as close to that quality demo as you possibly can. But hey, right now who has that kind of money to spend on a demo without having a publishing deal?

So back to the question – Why Choose KCP? This will give you an idea on things you should consider when making that decision.

CHOICE ONE

Save a few bucks. Send your worktape, lyric sheet and check to Bob’s Demo Mill. Bob listens to your worktape and makes a chart. When Bob gets enough songs together to hire the band, they come in and record (possible as many as 20-24 songs in a day). To keep up that pace they typically listen to only the first verse and chorus of your work tape. They play it through once to make sure the chart makes sense. Then they record it and move on to the next song. The demo singers come in the next day sing those 20 songs. The next couple days the engineer mixes out those 20 songs. And yours gets email out to you. Done!

CHOICE TWO

Email KCP and schedule what session your song will be recorded on, as Kim only records 5 or 6 songs on a session. Send your worktape, lyric sheet and check. Kim calls or emails you. If she has any questions about your work tape, she goes over everything with you. She’ll want to know what your ultimate goal is for the demo. What genre you are pitching too. What style vocalist would be best. She will make suggestions if she hears ways the song might be improved upon.

Kim charts the songs. She sends a copy of your worktape and lyric sheet to the selected demo singer so they can get familiar and choose a key.

On session day, Kim brings in 5-6 professional session players to her Music Row studio. The musicians, along with Kim sit together in the control room while she plays your worktape for them. She points out what she wants from each player. She tells the rhythm section what the groove and tempo should be, when she wants the electric guitar to come in, what the piano lead should sound like. Each player makes notes on their chart. They all go to their stations and play through the chart once while Kim is singing a scratch vocal part. She may stop them to make tweaks to the chart or possibly to change the tempo a bit. When Kim is happy, they then record the track (as many takes as needed). The drummer and bass player then leave the tracking room, while both guitar players and the keyboard player add 1-3 additional parts.

Later that day or possibly the next, the demo singer comes in. Even though they are professionals, Kim will still work with the singer to get the performance you and she discussed in pre-production. After Kim is happy with the lead vocal, she will have them add any harmony parts that would make it a stronger demo. Then over the next several days, Kim and the engineer will mix the song. Lastly it get emailed out to you along with a copy of the chart.
